Annette is not your average Family Council President. She not only volunteers her time to help families stay engaged and connected to Secord Trails Community , she contributes to its vibrancy creating beautiful artwork for residents, families and team members to enjoy. Annette’s mom, Wilmoth “Jo”, who she visits frequently has lived at Secord Trails for the past four years.

During one of her visits to Secord Trails Community, Annette noticed a chalkboard in the common area of the facility. Although the board was used to display information, it wasn't particularly appealing to look at. An idea sparked in Annette's mind – why not transform the chalkboard into a beautiful piece of art?

Annette had always been a creative and artistic kid. Her vivid imagination and love for all things art eventually led her to pursue a career as a graphic designer, where she honed her skills over two decades. Throughout her professional journey, she had dabbled in various artistic mediums, including photography, screen printing, woodwork etching, 3D modeling, ceramics, and sculpting. However, there was one medium she had never worked with: chalk.

Driven by her desire to make the environment more engaging and expressive, Annette decided to experiment with chalk art. In February 2020, she created her first chalk masterpiece for Valentine's Day. Little by little, Annette discovered the possibilities the chalkboard offered.

“I enjoyed experimenting with different colors, types of chalk, and techniques,” says Annette. “Over time, I grew more accustomed to working on a black canvas, learning to think and plan in reverse.”Annette Virtue puts finishing touches on her chalk art mural

Annette's chalk art became interactive, inviting the residents to participate. She would add their names or encourage them to stick objects on the board for her to incorporate into her drawings. Each weekend, the chalkboard transformed, gradually becoming more intricate and detailed. The residents eagerly anticipated the changes, generating conversations and inspiring their minds.

The central location of the 7ft x 9ft chalkboard, positioned in the middle of the wings, ensures that everyone sees and talks about it. But Annette never imagined her chalk art would become such an important part of the community. One day, a resident approached her, and praised her amazing work. Annette often received such heartfelt compliments, which touched her deeply.

As she worked on her creations, Annette witnessed the power of art in action. “The residents would reminisce about their past, sharing stories and memories from their school days,” says Annette. One particular resident would stroll down the hall, transported back in time, recalling her own experiences with an artist. Annette's chalk art became a catalyst for cherished memories.

Each chalkboard had a unique theme. In the latest one, a vibrant jungle theme teeming with life greets everyone. Annette dedicated immense time and effort to each piece, sometimes spending intervals of hours and days during a six week period, consisting of 45 to 80 hours all together on a single drawing.

Family Councils and individual family members make invaluable contributions to long-term care homes. They are essential partners in the care we provide to residents and during Family Council Week 2023, we celebrate all of the unique ways they bring joy into residents’ homes.
